SUMMARY OF TORAH PORTION – VAYISHLACH
“He Sent” • Genesis 32:3–36:43
Vayishlach opens with Jacob returning to the land of his fathers after twenty years in exile. But before he can step into promise, he must confront the unresolved fear of his past — Esau, the brother he deceived.
Jacob sends messengers (vayishlach) ahead with gifts, hoping to soften Esau’s heart. When he learns Esau is approaching with 400 men, Jacob divides his camp, prays for deliverance, and prepares for a possible attack.
That night, at the ford of the Jabbok, Jacob wrestles with a mysterious man until daybreak. This struggle becomes the turning point of his life — not a fight of muscle, but of identity. The “man” wounds Jacob’s hip, yet blesses him with a new name:
“Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel — for you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”
In the morning, Jacob meets Esau. Instead of violence, Esau embraces him. Grace triumphs over fear. What Jacob feared for decades dissolves in a single moment of mercy.
Vayishlach also recounts:
• The tragedy of Dinah and the violent actions of Simeon and Levi
• Jacob’s return to Bethel, where he builds an altar and God reaffirms the covenant
• The death of Rachel during Benjamin’s birth
• The death of Isaac, and the genealogies of Esau (Edom)
Through struggle, reconciliation, and loss, the portion shows Jacob transitioning from the man he was (Jacob: “heel-grabber”) into the man God called him to be (Israel: “one who prevails”).
