Commentary on Parashat Ki Tisa, Exodus 30:11-34:35

In Parashat Ki Tisa, God instructs Moses on building the Tent of Meeting during his 40 days on Mount Sinai. This sanctuary is where offerings are made, and priests must prepare before serving. The Israelites are commanded to keep the Sabbath, as it signifies their covenant with God.

While Moses is away, the people, fearing his return, demand Aaron make a god, leading to the creation of the Golden Calf. God, witnessing their corruption, plans to destroy them, but Moses intercedes, reminding God of His promises. Moses shatters the Tablets upon seeing the idol and punishes the people.

Moses seeks atonement for their sin, and while God offers to lead them to the Promised Land, He warns that His presence will not accompany them due to their stubbornness. Moses then meets God in the Tent of Meeting, requesting to see His glory. God allows Moses to see His back but not His face.

Moses returns to Mount Sinai with new tablets, where God reaffirms His attributes and the covenant with Israel. After 40 days, Moses descends with radiant skin, having spoken with God, and covers his face with a veil when interacting with the people.
